Courage Isn't Comfortable

I have a saying: "Get familiar with being uncomfortable in your comfortableness." My old mindset was one and done—no revision, just do it even if you've outgrown it. But life and Mother Earth (or Gaia) provide us with universal truths that life experiences are forever changing. These changes come in stages and processes that serve as a manuscript to help us navigate life and embrace that courage isn't comfortable. What does courage really look like? It's the sweaty palms, a shaky voice, and a heart thumping against your ribs. Courage is the willingness to be "cringey" or "scared" while doing the right thing anyway.

It's a reminder that when we become too complacent or comfortable, life creates opportunities for us to gain clarity, reconnect with ourselves, and move beyond doubt into our next destination. We are stopping the search for comfort and starting the search for impact. If it doesn't make you a little nervous, it's probably not growth. Remember: a process is the entire journey, while stages are the milestones or stops along that journey. You go through a process, but you reach a stage.

Chakra Activation: Solar Plexus (Manipura) Fire Third chakra, color yellow, located two fingers above the navel, mantra "Ram" and "OH" (like in "go"), focus: power, self-esteem, and strength. Courage requires us to tap into our personal power. The Solar Plexus Chakra is our engine of will. It's located in the upper abdomen, and it's where we store our "guts."

  1. Place one hand firmly over your diaphragm (just above the navel). Feel the heat of your palm.
  2. Imagine a blazing yellow sun at your center. This isn't a soft sun; it's a powerhouse.
  3. Take a sharp, powerful inhale through your nose. Hold for three seconds, feeling that yellow light intensify. As you exhale forcefully through your mouth, imagine you are blowing away the "fog" of hesitation.
  4. Repeat internally: "I do not need to feel comfortable to be capable. My fire is stronger than my fear."
  5. Give your stomach a firm, supportive pat. You are fueled for this day.

The Strategist's View: I look at comfort as a stagnation trap. If your life is perfectly comfortable, you are likely operating on autopilot.

  1. Anxiety vs. Excitement: Physiologically, anxiety and excitement are nearly identical. The only difference is the "story" your brain tells. Start telling yourself: "My body isn't scared; it's just preparing for a high-performance moment."
  2. The 20-Second Rule: You don't need to be brave for an hour. You only need 20 seconds of "insane courage"—to hit send, to walk through the door, to start the talk. The rest is just momentum.
  3. The Growth-Edge Audit: If you aren't feeling "the ick" at least once a week, your "self-care" might actually be "self-soothing." True care involves pushing yourself into the uncomfortable spaces where your next version lives.

If you are constantly waiting for the "fear" to leave before you start, you are giving the fear permission to lead. What if the fear is actually the compass pointing toward your greatest reward? Comfort is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. Your courage is not found in the absence of a racing heart, but in the decision to move while the heart is still racing.

Nourishment for Your Soul: What Courage Actually Feels Like

What if you've been waiting to feel brave before acting bravely? What if you've been postponing courageous action until the fear goes away? What if you've interpreted the uncomfortable sensations of courage as signs you're doing something wrong when they're actually evidence you're doing something right?

Consider this: The butterfly struggles to emerge from the chrysalis—that struggle is what pumps fluid into its wings and makes flight possible. The discomfort isn't a sign something's wrong; it's an essential part of the transformation. Your courage works the same way. The discomfort is the process, not a problem.

Honoring Your Brave Heart: The Discomfort That Defines Courage

There's a pervasive misunderstanding about courage: we think it means the absence of fear, that brave people don't feel afraid, or that courageous acts should feel confident and easy. But this is backwards. Courage is not the absence of fear—it's the willingness to act despite fear. It's not comfortable confidence—it's uncomfortable commitment to what matters more than your comfort.

Recognizing that courage isn't comfortable means: expecting discomfort when you're being brave, not waiting to feel confident before acting courageously, understanding that fear and courage coexist, honoring your nervous system's response without letting it stop you, distinguishing between productive discomfort (growth) and destructive discomfort (harm), celebrating yourself for acting despite fear, not because you didn't feel it, and knowing that every meaningful change requires uncomfortable courage.

This week, we honor your willingness to be uncomfortable in service of your truth and celebrate your courage to act even when your body screams to stay safe.

Build your courage muscle with small, uncomfortable reps. You can do this. Not because you feel brave, but because you're willing to be uncomfortable. And that willingness is all the courage you need.
