Let the Lesson Be Uncomfortable

"I have a greater appreciation and understanding of the importance of reflection. Through reflecting, my life has grown from the introspection of doing so. From our cultural conditioning, we do reflect, but it often comes from an outside-inside causation. For example: go to school and get good grades, get married, help others. When we do these things because they are expectations of society and they don't work out, we reflect based on that external societal experience and are led to believe we are failing at life.

Out of chaos, imbalances, misunderstandings, disagreements, embarrassment, shame, and guilt come lessons we experience and feel uncomfortable with. You'd think that we would have mastered being comfortable within uncomfortableness by now, but we often don't, and it can put our body and nervous system into flight, fight, freeze, and fawn states. When we feel uncomfortable with a situation or experience, what I've discovered and now embrace is that our greatest struggles and challenges hold our deepest lessons.

Many of us are uncomfortable in our bodies, in who we are, or in exploring who we are becoming. The process of accepting our lessons through the uncomfortableness can assist us in understanding on a deeper level. Growth is messy. It's cringey. It's awkward. If your self-care only involves bubble baths and soft music, you're missing the transformation that happens in the heat. We are giving ourselves permission to be uncomfortable, knowing that the discomfort is just the feeling of our old self stretching into something bigger.

As a strategist, I look at discomfort as high-value data. When we avoid discomfort, we are essentially deleting the data we need to upgrade our lives. Here are three ways to shift and use your data in your life: Stop labeling it "bad"—discomfort isn't a sign that something is wrong; it's a sign that you are at your current edge. That edge is where the learning lives. Use the 90-second rule—a pure emotion only lasts about 90 seconds in the body. If it lasts longer, it's because we are "story-telling" about it. Can you sit with the raw sensation for just 90 seconds without telling a story of "poor me" or "they're wrong"? Recognize the ego-death—sometimes the discomfort is just your ego realizing it isn't in control anymore. Celebrate that. The ego is a terrible driver anyway.

Here's how to audit your discomfort: Identify the "ugh"—write down one situation you've been avoiding because it feels "heavy" or "awkward." Locate the sensation—where do you feel it in your body? Tight throat? Racing heart? Heavy stomach? Do the extraction—if this discomfort were a teacher, what is the one sentence it's trying to say to you? (e.g., "You need a boundary here," or "You're playing small to make them comfortable.") Take the micro-move—what is one tiny, uncomfortable action you can take today to honor that lesson?

Remember: the lesson doesn't have to be pretty to be powerful. Don't rush to "fix" the feeling—let it finish its work on you."

What if the discomfort you're experiencing right now isn't a sign you're on the wrong path, but confirmation you're finally on the right one? What if that awkward feeling is just what it's like to do something that matters? What if the lesson requires discomfort precisely because comfort has been keeping you stuck?

Consider this: A butterfly must struggle to emerge from the chrysalis—that struggle is what pumps fluid into its wings and makes flight possible. If you "helped" by cutting the chrysalis open, the butterfly would never fly. Some discomfort is not meant to be avoided or rushed through—it's meant to be experienced as part of the transformation itself.

There's a seductive belief that personal growth should feel good, that self-care means always being comfortable, and that if something is hard or uncomfortable, you're doing it wrong. But this is a fundamental misunderstanding of transformation. Real growth—the kind that fundamentally changes you—often feels uncomfortable, awkward, vulnerable, and even scary. That discomfort is not a sign to turn back; it's a sign that you're at your growing edge.

When you set a boundary for the first time, it feels uncomfortable. When you speak your truth after years of silence, it feels vulnerable. When you leave what's familiar for what's aligned, it feels scary. When you sit with difficult emotions instead of numbing them, it feels intense. When you challenge old beliefs, it feels disorienting. This discomfort is not the universe telling you to stop—it's your soul telling you you're finally doing something different.
